This has several meanings, but today we will focus on one of them.
This means to control one's actions, reactions or emotions.It is usually used to calm someone down.
Example 1
John drinks too much and never remembers what he does. He needs to get a grip or he will end up getting in trouble.
Example 2
One of the room mates on the TV show Terrace House, whose name is Hana, just freaked out on Kai, who is another room mate. Kai should have told her to get a grip because she was most definitely, out of control.
